SEGA Hound Walking

Home >  Volunteering  > SEGA Hound Walking

While the Greyhounds await their adoption, we help care for them during their stay in the greater Atlanta area, which includes an evening “turn out” or walking.

Southeastern Greyhound Adoption is one of the most fortunate Greyhound adoption groups in the country to have a wonderful and modern kennel facility for many of our hounds while they await forever homes. The SEGA kennel is located adjacent to Lake City Animal Hospital in Acworth, Georgia, and benefits from on-site veterinary care for the Greyhounds in our adoption program. SEGA has enough runs to house up to 12 Greyhounds. The Lake City Animal Hospital staff cares for the SEGA kennel hounds during the day and SEGA hound walking volunteers assist with the last walking and playtime of the evening.

SEGA hound walking volunteers typically volunteer for one "shift" a month, which is only about a 1-1/2 hour to 2-hour commitment per month, usually between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. SEGA hound walking includes taking the dogs out in the fenced in play area and cleaning their runs out.

SEGA is fortunate to have many willing volunteers to walk dogs one night a week, one evening a month, or even one evening a quarter. For a limited time commitment, you are able to get actively involved with the dogs and help care for these wonderful creatures while we work to find them a new home. We try to have SEGA hound walking volunteer buddies, so no one person is walking, cleaning, and loving the hounds alone (feel free to recruit a friend or family member for some special bonding with hounds and humans alike!). SEGA is so lucky to have many SEGA hound walking volunteers who live throughout the metro Atlanta region. Volunteers who drive from as far as Midtown, Conyers, Newnan, and even Gadsden, Alabama say that the appreciation, love, and smiles received from the Greyhounds make it worth the drive!

How SEGA kennel hound walking volunteers help SEGA

  • Caring for the dogs during their stay in Atlanta;
  • Saving SEGA precious money so that the organization does not have to employ evening hound walkers; and
  • Helping SEGA screening and placement learn more about the hounds from walker feedback and antidotes, thus assisting with the proper placement of the right hound for the right home.

Why Volunteers feel good about kennel hound walking

  • They meet all the new Greyhounds available for adoption;
  • They get to play with and care for them;
  • They see up to 12 very happy tail-wagging hounds, who are SO happy to see them and get attention! It’s like coming home to 12 dogs all at once!; and
  • They see the number of Greyhounds that we are placing in homes, and knowing that they are helping in the process.

Time commitment

Approximately 2 hours per month, plus transportation time to/from the kennel.
