Transporting Greyhounds

Home >  Adopt  > Transporting Greyhounds

The guidelines below have been prepared for volunteers who will help transport Greyhounds and bring them to SEGA's kennel or take them to their foster home.

PRACTICE SAFETY

Always crate or muzzle the dogs. If you do not have room to crate the dogs, keep them muzzled at all times no matter how docile a dog may seem.

WALK THE DOGS

Before placing the hound in your vehicle BE SURE THE DOG PEES AND POOPS!!!

FEEDING THE DOGS

Do NOT feed the dogs before you travel.

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE

Under the blankets you put in the vehicle for the dog's comfort, place a plastic sheet. This way, if walking the dog above isn't effective your vehicle will not be ruined.

TRAVEL IN PAIRS

If you are transporting more than two hounds, always have a second person in the vehicle with you to ride shotgun and to hold a water spray bottle in case an argument breaks out in the back. There is nothing worse than a dog fight on the interstate when you are alone in the car.

PREPARATION

When picking the hound up from the kennel, a greyhound farm, or from a supplier plan in advance and get the following items from the kennel:

  • Always take Capstar (which Patty Winters will order for you from Lake City);
  • Get the number of collars, leashes, and muzzles you will need for the number of hounds you transport Take some dog wipes so you can wipe down the dogs before placing them in your vehicle (it will make you both feel better about the long ride);
  • Take some bottles of water and a water dish for thirsty Greyhound passengers; and
  • Take dog food with you so when you arrive at the kennel after hours, or after feeding has taken place, the dogs can have a meal once they arrive at our kennel. If you can, take Science Diet, which is what SEGA's Greyhounds are fed at the kennel. It will help reduce distress on their stomach at their next meal.

Be sure you notify Beth Kuhn, SEGA's processing chair, of your estimated time of arrival so they can be at the kennel to process the new hounds and arrange for dog bathers if necessary.
